Calumet County, Wisconsin

A big welcome from Calumet County – the county that specializes in welcoming. The name comes from a ceremonial pipe Native Americans used on the shores of Lake Winnebago. Calumet County residents are continuing this tradition with the county motto “We Extend the Calumet to All Mankind.”

In the early 1800s, the U.S. government relocated a number of Native American tribes from New England and New York to the area. These included Oneida, Brothertown and Stockbridge-Munsee Indians. Today each of these groups has a federally-recognized reservation Wisconsin. Early European settlers to what is now Calumet County included those from the Schleswig-Holtein area of Germany. They came in the 1840s and settled mostly in the southern part known as the Holyland.

Calumet County was organized in 1850, two years after Wisconsin became a state. The population is 49,000 people. Five other Wisconsin counties border Calumet County with Lake Winnebago comprising its main western edge. The county seat is Chilton, population 4,000.

Calumet Character

Calumet is a farming, rural place with special attractions like natural areas, fine dining and entertainment.

There are more cows than people in Calumet County. But that is a good thing: in the 1930s, the U.S. government designated the county as “one of the most important producers of American cheese among the counties of Wisconsin.”

But Calumet County truly emphasizes its welcoming attitude: the county is known as the only region in the country to actively promote tourism for people with disabilities. These include cognitive disabilities, physical challenges and visual impairments.

Some of the activities Calumet County offers in abundance are camping, especially on the shores of the county’s lakes and streams; fishing, especially in Lake Winnebago; farm tours and demonstrations; and caving – yes, exploring and experiencing underground caves and caverns (check out especially Ledge View Nature Center for this activity, which is even safe for children).

Calumet County is also known as the “Supper Club Capitol of the Midwest.” This means the county has many restaurants that serve in the supper club mode where diners get a four or five course dinner, great atmosphere often in a unique country setting like on a lakeshore or along a river, and wonderful, personal service – all at an affordable price. A few of the clubs in the county are Altoona Supper Club and Schwarz’s Supper Club both in New Holstein and Gobbler’s Knob Supper Club in Stockbridge.

We are happy to tell you about Calumet County’s parks. Becker Lake has a quiet atmosphere and is located on a peaceful prairie. Calumet County Park offers camping on the lakeshore, a marina, effigy mounds, trails and a tubing hill for winter fun. You will find caves and snowshoeing at Ledge View Nature Center among other activities, and nature hikes and other family activities at the Brillion Nature Center. Lastly, but certainly not least, is High Cliff State Park with cliffs to climb, trails, old lime kilns and an old general store to explore.

Communities in Calumet County

Chilton’s first non-Native American settlers were Moses Stanton, an African-American, and his Native-American wife Catherine. They came to the area in 1845. The city grew up around this couple’s saw and grist mills and was originally called, of course, Stantonville. In 1852, John Marygold bought the mills and the land around them and renamed the town Chillington, after Marygold’s hometown in England. Through a misunderstanding, the “ing” of the name was somehow left off and the city became Chilton.

Other interesting towns in Calumet County include Woodville, Harrison and Brothertown.
