The city of Columbus is a historic community that has preserved its proud heritage. Residential and commercial buildings showcase history of the late 19th century. The downtown area is considered a historic district. Populated by 4,971 people, Columbus is situated amid woodlands and rolling hills. The Crawfish River passes through the city. Serviced by five major highways, the city provides easy access to other southeastern Wisconsin communities. “The Red Bud City” offers a quaint and safe environment to become established.

The city maintains six public parks including Fireman’s Park and Astico Park. Fireman’s Park is the largest park in the area. The park is host to many community events such as the annual 4th of July event, Columbus Carriage Classic and a wildlife exhibit called the “Deer Pen.” Astico Park is located on the bend of Crawfish River and features campsites, picnic areas and hiking trails.

Columbus is home to the Christopher Columbus Museum that features souvenirs from the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition of Chicago. The museum is a part of the Antique Mall & Museum located in an old canning factory. The Antique Mall & Museum is the largest antique mall in Wisconsin.

The Columbus Area Senior Center provides activities and services. The center offers activities, programming, information and agency referrals to the senior community. The senior center’s goal is to enhance the quality of life of seniors in the area.

History
The first development of the area was started by Elbert Dickason who built a saw-mill and home in 1839. James T. Lewis, who went on to be the Governor of Wisconsin, was another pioneer who established himself in the area.

The city does showcase a statue of Christopher Columbus. There is also a museum that is dedicated to Columbus and showcases pieces from his era.
