Jefferson, Wisconsin is a city located at the fork of the scenic Rock and Crawfish rivers in Southeastern Wisconsin. Jefferson is known as the “Gemuetlichkeit City” for its rich German culture. It is just five miles south of I-94 and 45 minutes from Madison and Milwaukee. It also has ready access to State Highway 26 and US Highway 18. The city is home to 7,800 residents and is the county seat of Jefferson County.

Amenities

One of the things Jefferson is known for is its strong economic foundation. Big companies like Tyson Foods and Purina PetCare comprise the city’s robust business climate. Jefferson has two industrial parks and its business center is home to over 20 different businesses. Several financial institutions (with assets exceeding $150,000,000) can be found within the city.

The city also has an excellent school system. It has two elementary schools, one middle school, one high school, two private parochial schools and St. Coletta, a school with a 100-year tradition of supporting individuals with developmental disabilities. Nearby Jefferson is one of the largest colleges in the Wisconsin Technical College System – Madison Area Technical College (MATC). MATC’s Fort Atkinson campus serves approximately 50,000 students per year, and offers a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal arts and sciences, adult basic education and continuing education, as well as customized employee training.

Jefferson has much to do in the area of recreation. It has eight parks offering golf, soccer, tennis, softball, a skateboard facility and ice-skating rink. It also has a Family Aquatic Center, which features a pool with zero depth, heated water and a 120-foot water slide.

The city’s two rivers offer many outdoor activities including boating, canoeing, fishing and more. The Glacial Drumlin Trail is located north of the city and has 51 miles of partially paved trails for hikers and bicyclists to enjoy. Visitors of the trail can take in the glacial landscapes while they walk or ride.

Jefferson also has one of Southeastern Wisconsin’s largest community theaters – Performing Arts Center. This famous auditorium seats 1,000 people and draws crowds from all over the state.

Some of the events in the area are the Jefferson County Fair, Madison Classic Spring and Fall Show, Autumn Fest and its most popular – Gemuetlichkeit Days, a festival displaying the city’s strong German tradition.

History

Upon the cessation of the Blackhawk War in 1836, settlers came to the area now known as Jefferson. The area became a village in 1857, and a city in 1878.
