History
In 1066, a major drought was suffered by the Aztec Native Americans who asked their gods for help. The Native Americans constructed and used pyramids for sacrificial purposes. Rain was then granted to them and drowned the pyramids. The overwhelming rain created a gorgeous lake that the Aztecs named Tyranena (Sparking Waters). Before the Black Hawk War of 1832, Chief Black Hawk proceeded through Lake Mills. The war was last stand of Native Americans in the Northwest. The first white settlers called the lake “Rock Lake” after the war. With a saw mill and gristmill produced on the shores of the lake, Lake Mills was established 10 years before Wisconsin became a state.
