The city of Waterloo, located in Jefferson County, sits along the sinuous Maunesha River and is known for its commitment to physical fitness, outdoor recreation and natural preservation. In fact, Waterloo adopted the Fit City Challenge in 2009 – a community initiative to encourage and empower participants to increase their level of physical activity and fruits and vegetables consumption. It has also been a Tree City for over 13 years – an honor given to recognize the city’s commitment to forestry. Waterloo and its residents draw much of their values from the environment: a landscape with many beautiful amenities.

Amenities

Among the treasured natural features in or around Waterloo are the Maunesha River, Waterloo Wildlife Area, Garman Natural Preserve and the Glacial Drumlin Trail. The Maunesha River is part of the Mississippi River watershed via the Rock and Crawfish Rivers. The Waterloo Wildlife Area is 6,179 acres of public hunting land. It is located just one mile east of the City and features pheasants, rabbits, squirrels, ducks, deer and sandhill cranes. The Garman Natural Preserve is a 40-acre expanse that features 26 ancient Native American burial mounds. It also happens to be one of the highest points in the county. The Glacial Drumlin Trail is located north of the city and has 51 miles of partially paved trails for hikers and bicyclists to enjoy. Visitors can also take in the glacial landscapes while they walk or ride.

The city also has many parks for visitors and locals to enjoy. The biggest park is Fireman’s Park, which features a nine-hole disc golf course, athletic facilities, pavilions and a 100-year-old C.W. Parker Carousel. The carousel is one of the only 150 left in the United States and is listed on the State and National Registry of Historic Places.

Some of the other parks and natural sites in the area accommodate recreational opportunities as well; such as biking, marathons, hunting, fishing, canoeing and bird watching. For bicycling enthusiasts, the city hosts the Trek 100, a bike ride to support pediatric cancer and related blood disorders. The event has drawn thousands of riders since 1990 and has contributed $8 million to the cause.

Waterloo is home to big companies like Trek Bicycle – one of the leading bicycle manufacturers in the world. Trek provides bikes for road, mountain or town and aims to raise awareness about the bicycle being the most efficient form of transportation available. Also located within the city limits are companies like Breiss Industries Inc. and Crave Brothers Farmstead Cheese. Briess Industries manufactures and supplies quality ingredients to the brewing, food and pet food industries. Crave Brothers Farmstead Cheese provides hand crafted fresh mozzarella, mascarpone and Farmers Rope String Cheese.

History

Waterloo was once called “Naneesha,” a Native American pronunciation of the Maunesha River. The name means “crooked river,” an appropriate moniker considering the meandering disposition of the river.

Joseph Edwards, a citizen of Michigan became Waterloo’s first settler in 1834 when he traveled the landscape with a fellow companion. Until 1845, the town was a part of Aztalan.
