The Wisconsin River originally drew people to the Wausau area. The Chippewa (Ojibwa) Indians called the place “Wausau” which means “far away place,” where they made yearly hunting excursions to the vicinity. Early French explorers and fur-traders referred to the area as “Big Bull Falls.” “Bulle” which means “bubbles” in French refers to the bubbles that form in this part of the river. The area around Wausau was once the site of vast virgin pine forests that the local citizens called “The Piney.” As sawmills began to process the wood into lumber, the city began to grow. The railroad brought more accessibility and soon the automobile changed the transportation picture once again.
