A Little Marquette County History

The French were the first Europeans to settle in what is now Marquette County. They encountered Menominee and Winnebago Indians, who the French said, were usually at war with one another. The United States government eventually made treaties with these tribes and according to one historical document, “… the Indians … became very friendly and carried on trade with settlers.” The Europeans —English, Irish, Polish, Norwegian and others — referred to the area as “Indian Lands” because it was the last place Indian tribes inhabited in Wisconsin.

Today, as in the past, people find arrowheads, pottery, hatchets and spears the former inhabitants made and used, especially near lakes and streams where the Indians established villages. These tribes also built many mounds in the area, often conical in shape, but some mounds were built in the forms of turtles, lizards, birds and other animals.
