Menomonie County, Wisconsin

Menomonie County, Wisconsin – a beautiful, natural area.

Menomonie County is 45 miles northwest of Green Bay, Wisconsin and was created in 1959 when the Federal government dissolved the Menominee Indian Reservation. It is located in the northeastern part of the state of Wisconsin and borders the Oconto County on the east, Langlade County on the northwest and Shawano County on the south.

After tribal status was restored in 1973, most of the land in the county became part of a Federal Land Trust. This trust designated the land for exclusive use by the Menominee Indians. A few plots of land that private owners purchased before the tribe was terminated and a number of parcels around Legend Lake are the only lands owned by non-Indians. Nearly all of the people in Menomonie County are Menomonie tribal members.

Menomonie County has a population of 4,562 people. In the county are the communities of Neopit and Keshena, and the small settlements of Zoar and South Branch.

The main roads in the county are Wisconsin state highways 47 and 55.

There are 234,355 acres of land in Menomonie County of which 223,500 acres is forest. This is Wisconsin’s largest tract of virgin timberland. Four rivers flow through Menomonie County: the Wolf, the Evergreen, the Oconto and the Red River. These waterways afford canoeing, rafting, fishing, boating and swimming. Legend Lake, the main recreational area in the county, is a spring-fed body of water. The lake is over six miles long and has 47 miles of shoreline, much of which is developed with permanent and seasonal homes. The Legend Lake property owners association maintains a website for additional information.

Keshena, the county seat of Menomonie County, has a population of 1,210 people and is in the midst of Wisconsin’s “Vegas Triangle.” The Menomonie Casino Resort in Keshena advertises itself as “an exciting and entertaining place to meet, work, then relax and play.” It accommodates groups up to 1,000 and caters to the active gamer, offering gaming, of course, plus dining, entertainment and accommodations.
