Shawano is an Ojibwa word meaning “southern.” Sawanoh, a Menomonee chief, lived in the area and some believe the word comes from his name. These are Algonquian people, about whom the famous novel The Last of the Mohicans by James Fennimore Cooper was written.

Fur trading began in the 1600 and 1700s between British and French-Canadians and the Chippewa and the other Native American tribes in the area. By the 1800s, many Europeans, including Poles and Germans, began coming to the region to farm.

Shawano County has a population of about 41,000 and the city of Shawano is the county seat. The major highway is U.S. highway 45 and state highways include 22, 29, 32, 47, 52 and 55, among others. The county also has many exciting “rustic roads,” and county highways.

Other Villages and Towns of Interest in Shawano County

Starting with A, the town of Aniwa was once a logging center. Today it’s a shadow of its former self but still has a specialty wood worker living and working there. And Aniwa has trails for snowmobiles, hiking and bikes, and a great 4th of July celebration. Birnamwood has the world’s largest badger statue. The MIOUWASH recreational trail passes through the town and in the vicinity are a number of Class I trout streams. Bonduel is Shawano County’s biggest village with gift shops, Amish and antique stores. Also check out Bowler, where the Mountain Bay Recreation trail runs right through the center of the town. North of Bowler is the Stockbridge-Munsee Indian community where you will find the North Star Mohican Casino Resort, Pine Hills Golf Course and Supper Club and other enterprises the tribe operates. Also in Bowler are two museums where you can learn about the Mohican way of life: the Wea Tauk Village, an outdoor museum, and the Arvid El Miller Memorial Library and Museum.

Caroline, Cecil, Eland, Keshena, Marion, Mattoon, Pulaski, Tigerton and Wittenberg – whew! As you can see there are many towns beaconing you in Shawano County. All are unique and offer recreational, business and homesteading opportunities.
