Lake Geneva’s Studio Winery features an art gallery and recording studio in conjunction with its delicious wine. The Apple Barn Orchard and Winery in Elkhorn lets you pick your own strawberries, apples and pumpkins at peak season! Their unique wines attract visitors from all around while their donuts are a warm favorite among Walworth County residents and visitors. In Mukwonago, head over to the Elegant Farmer for delicious Wisconsin cheeses, homemade pies and their famous Cider Baked Ham Salad — you’ll know you’re in the right place when you see the smiley face on the side of the barn!

In Delavan, plan a whole day dedicated to creating experiences and relationships with animals! Start at the Animal Gardens Petting Zoo; it’s open from May to October and features pony rides and fun animal performances! Don’t miss Echo the parrot, famous for his appearance on America’s Got Talent! If you’re lucky, you just may catch him singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” or “Jingle Bells.” The seven other birds that accompany him during performances do everything from riding bikes and scooters to painting. After you see Echo and his friends, get tickets to The Dancing Horses Theater. Noted as a can’t-miss event in Walworth County, the Dancing Horses Dinner Theater features horses and their trainers in an unforgettable performance.

For a live performance of a different variety, check out the Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra. This all-volunteer symphony performs throughout the year and is composed of musicians from Wisconsin and Illinois. For a little bit of western flair, head to Elkhorn and get tickets to Watson’s Wild West Dinner Theater. Before the show begins, be sure to stroll through their Western Museum. Visit the General Store, pan for gold and see what it was really like to live in the Wild West!

Walworth County residents always look forward to the Walworth County Fair over Labor Day Weekend. It is the largest county fair in Wisconsin and draws visitors from all around. The fair features live bands, food and beverages, carnival rides and fair animals. Don’t miss out on “The Fairest of the Fair” competition — the highlight is the duct tape fashion show! Although the fair is one of the most exciting annual events in Walworth County, the visitors always give back to their community through this event. The Walworth County Fair Foundation accepts donations that are then used to further service to the surrounding communities. Recently, the Walworth County Fair raised enough money to feed over 30,000 to impoverished people.

Schools in Walworth County

Walworth County has 39 public schools and serves over 16,000 students. Walworth County high schoolers’ ACT scores are consistently higher than the national average. Perhaps more importantly, the percentage of high schoolers in Walworth County who take the ACT in preparation for college applications is higher than the national average. Walworth County’s close proximity to Chicago, Milwaukee and Madison offers many colleges and universities within a few hours’ drive. Many Walworth County students join students from all over the country at University of Wisconsin — Whitewater in Whitewater, Wisconsin.

Walworth County is also home to one of two schools in Wisconsin dedicated solely to educating children with special needs. Lakeland School of Walworth County, located in Lake Geneva, is “turning disabilities into possibilities” by providing a world-class education for special needs students. Known around the country as the “gold standard” in special education, Lakeland School of Walworth County is a clear example of the warm, inviting community that exists in Walworth County.

Walworth County’s superb location on the Wisconsin-Illinois border positions it uniquely as a bustling home for businesses. History of Walworth County

It was during the 1830s that settlers first came to Walworth County, many from Chicago and its surrounding areas. The settlers held elections in 1838, notably establishing Elkhorn as county seat. To this day, Elkhorn is the county seat of Walworth County. Initially a largely agricultural community, the establishment of the freeway system catapulted Walworth County to the forefront as a peaceful home, exciting travel destination and booming business community.
