A Short History of Green Lake County

Green Lake County came into existence in 1858 but Europeans had settled there as early as 1831. Originally part of Brown County, the area later became part of Marquette County and finally came into “its own” after the state legislature separated it from Marquette County. The first county seat was the town of Berlin but citizens voted to move it to Dartford (now the city of Green Lake). A courthouse was built in Dartford but citizens absconded with the county records in 1866 and moved the county seat to the town of Princeton, an effort which eventually failed and the county seat again became Green Lake by court order.

In the early 1800s, Europeans with names like Gleason, Powell, McDonald, Clark and others settled in the area opening trading centers, churches and eventually a post office. Quaint early settlement names include Strongsville, Treat’s Landing, Lexington and Arcade.
