Evansville is well-known for its entertainment and events. Its early days saw the famous Hall Circus and traveling entertainers. The city is now home to many art performances and events.

Early settlers called the area “The Grove” because of the large acres of maple trees that populated the settlement. Agricultural land attracted settlers from the east coast. In 1855, the first town emerged with construction of wood-frame homes, churches and shops. Agriculture was the main industry led by wheat and tobacco. In 1863, the first railroad service sparked a steady growth to the area. City development began in the late 1870s with residential, commercial and manufacturing districts that are recognized today. Evansville was established as a city in 1896.
