History
The first settler of the area was H. Roberts who constructed a saw mill on the shores of Honey Creek. Within four years, the area had a hotel, general store, post office and justice of the peace. The territory was named after where its first settlers came from, Troy, New York. State legislature declared the territory too large and divided the area; creating Meacham (after Jesse Meacham who was an early settler) and Troy.

Jesse Meacham disagreed with the name change and went before the state legislature to keep the name of Troy for the west side of the territory. Jacob Burgit heard about Meacham’s journey to retain the name and headed to the state capitol to fight for the name of Troy. Burgit was too late, so the name of Troy was claimed for the west and East Troy.
