The land that is Brookfield today was originally home to the Sac and Potowatomi tribes before the French invaded. In 1763, during the French and Indian War, the English gained control. It wasn’t until the American Revolution that Brookfield became a United States territory. Perhaps the most important historical moment of the City of Brookfield occurred in 1850 when the Milwaukee and Mississippi Railroad (present–day Canadian Pacific Rail) built a railroad through town. Still, between 1850 and World War II, Brookfield remained a quiet, primarily agricultural community. One of the most famous Brookfield residents was Al Capone, who favored the quiet town and owned a distillery on Brookfield Road. On August 14, 1954, the City of Brookfield was incorporated under its first Mayor Franklin Wirth. The city’s founders encouraged organized business development in both office and industrial spaces.
